Stakeholders Strategic Meeting to Curb Drug Abuse in Kano State

A Stakeholders’ Strategic meeting was held to deliberate and recommend to the government of Kano state the urgent need to establish a state owned Anti-Drug Abuse Agency to combat drug and substance abuse as a complementary structure to the Frderal agency- National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The meeting which was initiated by the Kano state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Hon Ibrahim Waiya brought together representatives of the NDLEA, the Nigeria Police Force, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The stakeholders noted the alarming rise in drug abuse and its link to criminal activities in the state, thus making it a source of concern.

The stakeholders unanimously agreed on the urgent need for a state-level agency focused on prevention, public sensitization, rehabilitation, and coordinated response to effectively address the drug abuse challenge in Kano State.


As part of her contribution, the Executive Director of IYECF Ambassador Maryam Muhammad, appreciate the NDLEA on the work they are doing to curb drug activities in the state, but emphasized on the need to have the state owned agency which will comprise of indigenes of the state, who know the nook and corners of the state, hide outs and other peculiarities which will be an added advantage towards the success of the war against drugs and substance abuse.
