The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has publicly destroyed 12.234 tonnes of assorted illicit narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances seized through intelligence-led operations across Kano State and at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).
The public destruction exercise underscores the Agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and substance abuse, which continue to pose serious threats to public health, security, and national development.
According to the Command, 11,890.427 kilograms of the destroyed drugs were intercepted by the Kano State Strategic Command. The seizures included 7,799.314kg of cannabis sativa, 2,781.153kg of psychotropic substances such as codeine, tramadol, pentazocine, and diazepam, 375.641kg of Exol-5, 367.870kg of pregabalin, 270kg of other substances of abuse, and 200kg of herbal mixtures.
Also destroyed were 79kg of expired drugs, 14.600kg of Quinalbarbitone Sodium BP 100mg, 2.030kg of heroin, 0.446kg of cocaine, 0.127kg of methamphetamine, and 0.246kg of pemoline tablets.
An additional 343.519 kilograms of illicit substances were intercepted at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport. These included 322kg of tramadol, 11kg of heroin, 6kg of herbal mixtures, and 4.499kg of cocaine.
The destruction of the seized drugs followed their forfeiture through due legal processes and serves as a strong warning to drug traffickers and dealers that the Agency remains resolute in dismantling illicit drug networks.
The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to strengthening intelligence gathering, surveillance, and collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders to curb the production, trafficking, and abuse of illicit substances in Kano State and across Nigeria.
The Agency also urged members of the public to support the fight against drug abuse by providing timely and credible information on suspected drug-related activities within their communities, emphasizing that collective action is essential to safeguarding society from the devastating consequences of illicit drugs
