Indigent Youth Education and Care Foundation organized a round table discussion on “Ending Violence against Women and Girls and seeking justice for victims”, as it celebrate both the 16 Days of activism against Violence against Women and Girls and the International Human Rights Day on 10th December 2024, at the American Corner, Murtala Muhammed Library Kano.
In attendance were religious leaders (Muslim and Christian) who spoke on what the religious scriptures says with regards to violence on any human being and the need to be sympathetic towards the vulnerable. Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil (Muslim) and Apostle Gideon Adeniyi( Christian) admonished perpetrators of violence saying it is against the teaching of any religion and called on the government to put measures on ground to curbe the menace and support victims.
Barrister Sanni Ammani emphasized on the existing laws and policies available that serves as protection to victims of violence and abuse and called on the government to strengthen those policies that are weak or not yet implemented.
Hon Habibu Abdullahi Mailemo, a politician called on politicians to support efforts towards eradicating gender based violence and to come up with policies that will protect the vulnerable and impose strict punishments on perpetrators to serve as deterrent to others.
Representatives of government agencies, Local Government council, Women groups, youth leaders, local community based organizations and people living with disabilities were represented at the event.
